Our events provide an opportunity to join with other public-interest individuals, enjoy wine from vineyards where farmworkers are treated well, and learn how your support can make a difference in the lives of farmworkers.
May 8, 2013 at 6:00 to 8:30pm
Hosted at the National Education Association - 1201 16th Street, NW Washington, DC 20036
During this reception, we present awards to people who have made important contributions in the quest for farmworker justice.
The 2013 Farmworker Justice Award will be presented to Rep. Raúl Grijalva, who represents 3d Congressional District, in southwestern Arizona, which includes the important agricultural areas around San Luis, Somerton and Yuma. The son of a farmworker who labored under the Bracero program, Rep. Grijalva at a young age viewed Cesar Chavez as a hero. He has been a strong supporter of farmworkers, workers’ rights and immigration reform, as well as other causes that serve the interests of the working people of this country.
The 2013 Shelley Davis Memorial Award will be presented to Nelson Carrasquillo, the General Coordinator of Comite de Apoyo para los Trabajadores Agricolas (Farmworker Support Committee), known as CATA, headquartered in Glassboro, NJ with offices in Pennsylvania and Maryland. FJ has worked with CATA over many years on a range of issues, including the H-2A guestworker program, immigrants’ rights, and occupational safety and health. CATA has been a very effective organization, one that Shelley Davis, our late Deputy Director, collaborated with for years.
